You might think that we don’t care about you and your pet snakes at all, but we do respect your choice of pet and we want to advocate the health and wellbeing of all pets in South Africa. The point we are trying to make is that the rat that suffers as live feed has the same rights as the snake it is being fed to. They both have the right to be cared for and to live a life without being intentionally placed in harm’s way .
Above and beyond the fact that feeding live rats to your snake is cruel and against the Animal Protection Act (NO. 71 OF 1962), feeding live rats is also dangerous to your snake.

Why feed frozen/pre-killed prey?
· Rats will defend themselves. The largest incidences of rat attacks on snakes happen when the snake isn’t hungry and the feeder rat is left alive inside the enclosure. A bite from a rat can seriously wound or kill your snake. Every time you use live prey, you run the risk of getting your snake injured or killed in the process!
· Frozen prey can be easily stored and kept in large amounts so that you have food on hand for your snake whenever he/she is hungry.
· It’s the humane and legal thing to do!
